I’ve talked a lot about how much I like the whole name-your-price thing on Bandcamp. And I still like it. But I’ve been doing a bit of thinking lately and I’ve decided to change the way I’m going to go about it. Carry Us All Away has been out for almost two months now, and the average amount I’ve gotten per album download is right at 99 cents (and that’s before Bandcamp’s 15% fee). I’m not disappointed with this number, but I’m starting to view what I’m doing with my future goals in mind.
As I mentioned in previous posts, this new album was the first one that I put a significant amount of money into. I really want to make my records as professional sounding as possible, and having it professionally mastered was a big step toward that and I think it was really worth it. It was also pretty expensive! But I will continue to do it for future releases, and along with getting better recording techniques, I hope to keep getting better recording gear to help get stuff sounding better.
Because of your generosity, I’ve been musically self sufficient for a while now. That means that whatever music/recording gear I get is from money I’ve made through album sales/shows/etc. And I am incredibly thankful to you for that! But I feel like I really want to set myself up to get to the next level with my music, and so I’ve decided to raise the $0 minimum for two of my albums. Carry Us All Away is now a minimum of $6 and Seafront is now a minimum of $4 for digital download. I am doing this because I really want to upgrade my recording gear, and also get some money in the bank to cover recording/mastering costs of future releases.
As always, thank you guys for being so gracious and for being interested in this music that I make. I’m really amazed at the response I’ve gotten from you. This year has some good stuff in store I think.
